Miami, Florida's Wykked Wytch released the music video for their 'cover of a cover' version of Sweet Dreams today. The extreme black/death track is off their latest release entitled, Memories of a Dying Whore. Kevin Custer, who recently shot Overkill's new video directed the shoot which took place in New York.
An upcoming tour and possible digital EP is in the works, according the bands statement in the following interview.
Blissfulviolet: Sweet Dreams...how did the idea to cover this song come up? Are you a fan of Annie Lennox?
WW: Originally it was a joke for practice; we said 'let's do a cover song of a cover song.' We thought it was gonna be fun to do a cover of the Marilyn Manson version and it started growing on us, so we decided to release it. I don't listen Annie Lennox but I guess she is good what she does...
Blissfulviolet: Considering that Marilyn Manson and some underground artist have covered this song before, what do you think your version brings new to the table and how do you feel about Manson's version?
WW: Basically our version was suppose to be a "cover" of a "cover". We've never heard of any extreme metal bands cover the song or we wouldn't have tried. We butchered it in a sense that song is transformed into a new modern, speedy version. The riff in Sweet Dreams felt so "black metal". Manson's was great, but its pop compared to ours.
Blissfulviolet: Are there any other songs that you think would make a great cover if they were revamped black metal style or plans for Wykked Wytch to cover any other songs in the future?
WW: Since we've got such a great response with Sweet Dreams, we are planning to do a digital ep with several covers. We should make the announcement in a few months, but nothing solid yet.
Blissfulviolet: Tell us about the Sweet Dreams video shoot. How did it go and were any of the bands ideas incorporated in its making or was it completely taken care of by the director?
WW: The video shoot went great. We came up with the idea and concept ourselves. Originally we wanted to shoot in a sewer, but settled with an alley in Harlem. The director helped us accomplish our vision and created and shot the narrative separate. He did a great job and you will be seeing a lot from him in the future. He just shot the new Overkill video and has a video with Kingdom Of Sorrow coming up.
Blissfulviolet: What would you say you enjoyed the most about making this particular video?
WW: We loved making this video cuz we loved the song and how it got resurrected from a pop song to black/death extreme. It was very cold and cloudy in NY so it gave a great mood for band to perform.
Blissfulviolet: How has Wykked Wytch's latest release, Memories of a Dying Whore been received so far?
WW: The album has just been released worldwide and all the feedback has been positive. We are now looking forward to promote the album and touring.
Blissfulviolet: Any idea when the touring will take place?
WW: We should have a major tour announcement soon and the promotion for the album is taking off now. Video & radio airplay starting in the next few weeks and magazine articles coming out as well.
Blissfulviolet: Sounds great, cool video and version of Sweet Dreams by the way...Any final comments?
WW: Thanks for the support and spreading our disease!
